Creep into the Deep
Virtual Research Mission to the Deep-Sea

Deep Sea Scientist Bios and more!

Hey kids,
We have so many amazing scientists on this missions that I knew you'd want to learn more about them. Below are links to their interviews. These scientists lead amazing lives!   Also, learn more about an important part of the mission -- the research vessels. Below are links to learn more about Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory's research ship, the
Ka`imikai-o-Kanaloa (*KoK), and Pisces submersibles.
Of course, we've left room for you -- our virtual team members -- to share a bit about yourselves, too.

    Enjoy.

*FYI: The ship is nicknamed, KoK

Virtual Research Team January 2011  Mission

The Virtual Team Member bios help the science team learn more about you and the other virtual team members. Some classes shared what they're learning, some share 'who' they are, and all are very interesting. Enjoy!

We spent some time studying Oceanography last semester. We learned about fish and cetaceans among other things. We thought this would be a great way to wrap things up and add to what we have already learned. We are so excited to participate in this program and gain some insight into what it is like to be a scientist and do research. We are also looking forward to learning about creatures of the deep and how they have adapted to live in this environment. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity! We look forward to hearing from you soon.

4th Many of our students are 9 and will be 10 years old next year. Felicita fourth grade students from Mrs. Washington's class are curious about the underwater world and, like sponges, we want to know more about the world. We look forward to communicating with the Virtual Science Teams so that we can practice our written communication skills.  We are excited about using technology in the classroom and love to read. We hope to discover how deep the ocean is from the shore to the bottom of the ocean. We'd also like to know what the scariest ocean creatures are that you've seen. Also, will you be sending pictures of all the ocean life you discover. We are very excited about being on board with you.

2nd and 3rd Living near the ocean makes us very interested in marine life and learning how to help ocean animals.  We loved celebrating Hagfish Day in October!

This year we have spent some time learning about volcanoes and how some are formed underwater. We have also spent a lot of time studying the water cycle and why the ocean has salt. We found it very interesting that one of the ways that salt is introduced to the ocean is when underwater volcanoes erupt. We are excited to learn more about life underwater.

Some of the things we hope to discover are: How big are the volcanoes underwater? How do volcanoes form underwater? How long does it take for one to reach the ocean floor?  How dark is it at the bottom of the ocean? Do plants grow in the deep ocean? What is your favorite animal you have seen?

Thank you so much for including us in your mission this year. We cannot wait to hear from you.

NOVATAG Grades
4-8th

We are a group of Talented and Gifted Homeschoolers studying all different parts of the Ocean, from studying the layers and geological characteristics of the oceans including ocean currents, topology, salinity, depths, and various ocean life. Some have read about shallow corals and have started a unit on deep sea coral.

We hope to learn all about the different creatures that live deep beneath the ocean and how the scientsts go about studying them without affecting their habitat. We are looking forward to the scientist emails and hope they have lots of new discoveries to share! Thanks and Good Luck!

We are studying fraction/decimals, multiple meaning words, magnetism, early CA history.

We have lots of questions including: Do the volcanoes explode often? What fish do you research? What animal is more interesting? What's in the deep that's worth risking one's life? I want to know what types of creatures we are going to see? I wonder if you will see any sharks? How do the volcanoes in the ocean effect the sea animals? Are there sperm whales in Hawaii? What pictures will you take? Have you ever discovered any sea creatures you didn't know existed? Do you get attacked by a creature sometimes? Why do you study in the sea and do you like studying it? Don't you get scared that something might eat you? We are so excited to learn more about what you do!

4th,5th & 6th We study physical science, life science, earth science and the human body.

We are wondering if you will see any octopus and how do tell the gender of an octopus? What is it like being in a submarine deep in the ocean? What are you most looking forward to on this mission?

We hope you have fun because work should be fun too. We wish you a safe mission with lots of new and interesting discoveries.

We are a group of students that are a part of the Gifted Support program in our district. Our group consists of students from K-12  therefore we have a varied interest in your cruise.  We are all curious about your adventures as scientists in such a cold environment.  We are eager to share in your experiences.

We are very excited about your daily routines and admire your willingness to share your experiences with us.

Liv W,

homeschool

6th grade Science is my favorite subject. I live in land-locked Missouri and absolutely love the water. I have always love the ocean but realized how much when we went to Cape San Blas, Florida. I love everything about the ocean and want to study & work with marine animals of all types. Some of my favorites are: dolphins, dumbo octopus', jellyfish, nudibranch, starfish and seals. My all time favorite is the manatee. I recycle aluminum cans and do odd jobs to donate money to the Save the Manatee Foundation. I recently adopted two manatees: Margarito and Ariel.
I am so excited about this opportunity and cannot wait to see what you will discover on the trip and share with me. I don't have any specific questions right now. I just want to learn everything I can about life in the ocean.
Best of Luck to you all on your journey!
