Postcards from the Deep™ | Hagfish Day™ |
Dear Teachers,
We are just adding and testing our new Taking Science Deeper curriculum. In addition to the activities, Taking Science Deeper includes three exciting programs to help you and your students explore the animals and science of the deep: Creep into the Deep (send your student's signature to the deep-sea); Hagfish Day (celebrate the beauty of ugly); and Postcards from the Deep (postcards from deep-sea explorers).
Our Taking Science Deeper curriculum is designed for k-6 students. It is still being tested, so some activities are still awaiting standards and objectives or perhaps other bits of information...but should still be fun! Let us know how they work in your classroom.

Activity: Students try to recreate the pressure animals and submersibles feel in the deep
Animal Activities (These science, language arts...etc. activities are not limited to Hagfish Day)
Activity: Students experience slime and hypothesize why hagfish make buckets of slime
Note: we suggest you do this activity before Extreme Makeover-Ugly Edition so the kids can really brainstorm.
Teacher comments and suggestions for this activity:
IT WAS REPULSIVE, GROSS AND A PERFECT SCIENCE ACTIVITY.
My kids love all of it. The fun sheet is a must.
You don't need to make copies of the fact sheet for the activity. Just have a few facts to share with the kids.
Have paper towels available to wipe hands after, if your classroom doesn't have a sink.
If more than one class is using the slime, you might want to have kids wash their hands before playing with the slime.
Activity: Students discover the importance of less well-known, appreciated, or attractive ocean animals as they make them "red-carpet ready" by promoting them like rock stars!
Fishin for Facts™: You'll find information on the animals included in the Hagfish Day activities on our Fishin' for Facts pages or use these easy to print pdfs:
