    10 things you should know about..Pinnipeds!

1.

 A pinniped is a seal, sea lion, or walrus.

2.

The Equator, Arctic, and Antarctic...pinnipeds are found in oceans and coastal waters all over the world 

3. Two kinds of pinnipeds live in freshwater:

The baikal seal(Pusa sibirica)from Lake Baikal in Russia.

And a harbor seal subspecies (Phoca vitulina mellonae)lives in lakes and rivers of the Ungava Peninsula in Canada.

Seals are in the scientific family, Phocidae

5.

Fur seals and sea lions are in the scientific family Otariidae

6.

Walruses are in the scientific family Odobenidae

7.

Seals and walruses do not have external ear flaps. Sea lions and fur seals have ear flaps.

8.

Seals have short flippers with noticeable claws. Sea lions, fur seals, and walruses have longer flippers.

9. On land, sea lions, fur seals, and walruses can rotate their hips underneath their bodies, so they can crawl. Seals cannot, so they bounce or undulate on their bellies to move across beaches.
10.

The largest pinniped is a southern elephant seal. The oddest might be a hooded seal. The leopard seal is just one kind of pinniped that eats penguins.
