Fishin' for Facts: Adélie Penguin

Common name: Adélie Penguin

Scientific name:  Pygoscelis adeliae

Adélie penguins can be 60 cm tall.  They can weigh 4.5 kg.

All penguins are only found in the Southern Hemisphere. Adélie penguins are found along the coast of Antarctica.   Adélie and emperor penguins are the only two species limited to the Antarctic to breed.

Adélie penguins mostly eat krill.

During breeding season, Adélie penguins get a bright white ring around each eye. Breeding pairs build a rock nest. And, like other penguins, both the male and female share in the incubation and care of the chick. Once the chick has its waterproof feathers (about 7 weeks after it has hatched), it is on its own (it is abandoned by the parents).

Predators include killer whales and leopard seals. Chicks (and eggs) can be eaten by seabirds like skuas, sheathbills, giant petrels.

They are not threatened or endangered. There are an estimated 2,465,000 breeding pairs of Adélie penguins.
