Fishin' for Facts: River Sharks

Every knows sharks live in the oceans. A few people know some ocean sharks travel upstream  - like the bull shark. But, very few people know that there are sharks that live their entire lives in rivers. It’s true. They are called "river sharks." There may be as many as 5 different kinds of river sharks. Very little is know about the river sharks. Scientist think they eat fish. We don’t know how big they get, what else they eat, or even all the places they live. River sharks are a modern mystery.

(Note; The New Guinea river shark may be the same species as the speartooth river shark. Further research is needed.)

The Ganges river shark is considered to be "critically endangered." What about the other river sharks? Because most river sharks are not well known, we don’t know if their populations are getting bigger or smaller. We do know that animals with limited ranges (rivers for example) can be easily disturbed if humans take too many fish or don’t pay attention to how their home.
